Unicorn desserts have been invading social media, left, right and centre. Every time I click the location link to see where I can get my hands one these “unicones” , they always show up with American cities or somewhere in South East Asia, never Australia. Until recently PicaPika Waffles, who specialise in Hong Kong egg waffles, decided to make a Unicorn version of a Japanese dessert, Taiyaki.
Traditionally, Taiyaki is a fish-shaped cake commonly filled with red bean past, custard or chocolate. Inspired by this, Picapika combined traditional and modern flavours of Japan and executed these unicorn ice cream served in a fish-shaped cone. The flavours they offered were matcha and bubblegum soft serve for their Taiyakis.
Picapika also offers a range of other desserts such as Hong Kong Egg Waffles, served in a cup so it’s a lot easier and neater to eat. The options of flavours they had were matcha, vanilla and chocolate. I always order anything matcha whenever I have the chance to, so it was obvious what I would choose. The waffle and ice cream were garnished with some chocolate sauce, a few pocky sticks, oreos and red bean paste which was the perfect accompaniment for the matcha ice cream!
